The new Gold standard
The original Tannoy Monitor Gold Dual Concentric™ driver was launched in 1967 as a major upgrade
to the well-received Monitor Red series.
The ‘Golds’ found immediate favour with recording studios and audiophiles for their pin-point acoustic
accuracy, high efficiency and easy to drive impedance characteristics.
Fitted into world renowned Tannoy loudspeakers such as the Lancaster, Autograph and GRF (named after
the company’s founder Guy R. Fountain), the Monitor Gold was also the driver of choice for customers
wanting to build their own loudspeaker cabinets.
The Monitor Gold Dual Concentric has become one of the most famous Tannoy drivers in the company’s
85+ year history.
Tannoy’s senior engineers have been working on upgrades to the Prestige SE series since 2010, deploying
much of the cutting edge technology developed for the flagship Kingdom Royal.
Some of the advancements are universal across the Prestige GR series while individual technologies and
engineering improvements have also been developed specifically for each driver and cabinet.

The time-honoured method of construction of the famous Prestige cabinets remains unchanged, although the
intricate wood-working detail and metal trim pieces have been enhanced with the GR upgrade.
These bespoke pieces of fine acoustic furniture have been hand crafted from birch ply wood by Tannoy’s
finest artisans for many decades.
They remain the world’s finest traditional loudspeaker cabinets.

New cone material
At the top of Tannoy’s new Prestige GR range, both the Canterbury GR and Westminster Royal GR are
fitted with a newly developed cone material.
To increase rigidity across the larger surface area of these 15 inch Dual Concentric™ drivers, the fibrous mix
within the cone material has been revised to realise further improvements in the cone’s mechanical characteristics.
Modern imaging technology affords incredibly detailed analysis of cone mechanics under load and many
versions of the cone pulp mix were evaluated prior to the final selection of this vital component.
Several pulp mix formulas offered improved damping and exceptional mechanical performance over the
previous SE series cone.
As with all revisions to Tannoy’s important Prestige series models, the final selection of material was the result
of critical auditioning with a wide range of music.
Canterbury GR and Westminster Royal GR models now offer an even more dynamic presentation than their
predecessors, with reduced colouration and an incredibly natural mid band response.

High Frequency
A new HF compression driver diaphragm has been developed for all Prestige GR models featuring
Tannoy’s Alnico powered motors and Pepperpot Waveguide™.
Fitted to the Kensington GR, Canterbury GR and Westminster Royal GR, this technology was developed
for Tannoy’s flagship residential loudspeaker, the Kingdom Royal, and has been adapted for use in the new GR series.
Many months of R&D were spent testing and auditioning numerous alloys and heat treatment
configurations before final selection of a heat-tempered aluminium alloy.
The production diaphragms are individually tested and, along with the mated copper-clad aluminium
voice coil, are fully deep cryogenically treated.
This state-of-the-art process, involving freezing to minus 190 degrees Celsius and slowly returning to
room temperature over a controlled period, relieves residual stresses in the microstructure of the
diaphragm and reduces crystal boundary imperfections in the voice coil.
Extensive auditioning showed this extreme process to offer greater naturalness and emotional
communication of the music.
The use of Mylar™ surrounds on the HF diaphragm is also a result of the Kingdom Royal development
and now features on these three Prestige GR models.
This innovative material affords better energy termination at the diaphragm boundary, delivering a smooth
HF response up to higher frequencies.
The signature Pepperpot Waveguide™ remains on the GR series as it further enhances the point source
symmetrical dispersion properties of the driver.
An even sweeter and more natural response has been attained through the radical overhaul of the HF section,
allowing the GR series to build on Tannoy’s acknowledged attributes of musical communication and articulation.

Crossover
The major GR revisions in the Dual Concentric™ drivers and findings from the Kingdom Royal development
project have resulted in crossover improvements across the new Prestige GR series.
Components renowned for their precise audiophile characteristics and with a tighter and more exacting tolerance
have been developed since the SE series was originally launched.
Component-by-component auditioning has led to significant revisions on every GR series crossover.
ICW ClarityCap™ MR capacitors are still used in the Westminster Royal, Canterbury and Kensington GR series
models, but unique to Tannoy, the leadout wires are PTFE insulated 99.99% single strand silver, extruded to our specification.
The result of ICW’s own ground breaking two-year research program, these devices use a high-specification
metallised polypropylene film encapsulated in an epoxy resin offering excellent self-damping characteristics and
class-leading performance, both measured and auditioned.
Revised low loss laminated core inductors and thick film resistors are used throughout the Prestige GR series
crossovers, chosen for their ability to resolve micro dynamic detailing.
One of the most significant performance advances achieved during Kingdom Royal development was in the
widespread use of deep cryogenic treatment (DCT) on the crossover and cabling components.
This process will be an integral part of all Prestige GR models from Kensington GR upwards.
Rather than treating the components individually, each fully assembled Prestige GR crossover is treated as a single unit.
Not only does this improve the audio characteristics at component and cabling level but also every solder joint
is treated to ensure end-to-end improvements in the metallic crystal structure throughout the signal path.
While this process is complex and expensive, the improvements in musical cohesion and smoothness made it
an essential part of the Prestige GR upgrade.
Around the back of each Prestige GR loudspeaker, Tannoy has adopted its unique fifth speaker terminal.
This terminal can be linked to the amplifier and electrically grounds the driver chassis, dramatically reducing
radio frequency interference circulating in most hi-fi audio systems.
Eliminating this RF ‘noise’ further enhances midrange clarity and opens up the soundstage throughout the presence
region for truly expressive music presentation.
Westminster Royal GR, Canterbury GR and Kensington GR use the very latest loudspeaker terminals from WBT,
the NextGen™ WBT-0703.
These high-end loudspeaker terminals ensure perfect signal transfer from your amplifier to the Prestige GR loudspeaker.

Celebration in Style
To celebrate the launch of Prestige Gold Reference and the latest evolution of the world famous
Monitor Gold Dual Concentric driver, the Prestige GR cabinets will benefit from a range of external styling
enhancements to reflect the quality and craftsmanship within.
Light reworking of the cabinet finish will include milled and machined detailing in the timber, new veneer inlays
within the front baffle of certain models, and precision machined metalwork, hard-anodised with a gold finish.
Tannoy continues to evolve the Dual Concentric™ driver and deliver a range of traditional loudspeakers that
set the standard for musical reproduction regardless of price.
The Prestige Gold Reference series stands as another benchmark in Tannoy’s rich history and is to be marked
with the return of the famous Tannoy ‘lightning strike’ logo.
Embossed into the gold metal trim on every GR series model, the logo serves to remind owners of the rich
heritage and decades of technical development that have gone into every Prestige Gold Reference loudspeaker.
